THE COMMANDMENT OF LOVE
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”
John 13:34
Main Text: Main Text: John 13:34–35
Love is not a suggestion in the Kingdom of God—it is a commandment. Jesus did not tell us to love people only when they are good to us, agree with us, or treat us fairly. He commanded us to love one another the same way He loved us. This kind of love is not natural human affection; it is the God-kind of love that flows from a transformed heart.
The believer is called to become a living expression of God’s love in a world filled with hatred, bitterness, offense, and division. Many people know how to speak in tongues, preach powerful sermons, or display gifts, but the true proof of spiritual maturity is love. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 13:2, “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge… and have not charity, I am nothing.” Without love, every spiritual activity loses its true value before God.
Love is the foundation of our walk with God. When love grows cold, people become easily offended, unforgiving, harsh, and proud. But when the love of God fills your heart, you begin to see people the way God sees them. You become patient with others, quick to forgive, and willing to help those in need. Love restores relationships, heals wounds, and reveals the nature of Christ through us.
Jesus showed us the perfect example of love. He loved sinners, touched lepers, forgave those who crucified Him, and laid down His life for humanity. Even on the cross, He cried, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). This is the standard of love we have been called into. As believers, we must daily ask the Holy Spirit to help us walk in genuine love toward God and toward people.
The commandment of love is also a weapon against the works of darkness. Satan thrives where hatred, envy, strife, and unforgiveness exist. But when a family, church, or believer walks in love, the power of God moves freely. Love creates unity, and unity attracts divine presence and blessing. The Bible says in Psalm 133:1, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
Today, choose love. Refuse bitterness. Refuse offense. Refuse hatred. Let the love of Christ rule your heart and your relationships. When people encounter you, let them encounter the love of Jesus.
Confession:
The love of God is shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Ghost. I walk in love daily and refuse hatred, bitterness, strife, and unforgiveness. I forgive freely just as Christ forgave me. My life reflects the nature of Jesus Christ. I am patient, kind, compassionate, and full of mercy. Through me, many will experience the love and goodness of God. Hallelujah!
