WRONG ATTITUDE TOWARDS MONEY: PROFITEERING
All things are legitimate [permissible — and we are free to do anything we please], but not all things are helpful (expedient, profitable, and wholesome). All things are legitimate, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].”
1 Cor 10:23
Main Text: 1 Tim 6:10
The practice of making or seeking excessive or unfair profit especially illegally or in a black market is known as profiteering. Making good profit indicates that you are making good and efficient use of the earth’s resource, thus obeying God’s creation mandate to be fruitful and subdue the earth (Gen 1:28). However, there can be wrong profit – if there’s a great disparity in power or knowledge between you and a client and you take advantage of that client and cheat them, you would not be obeying Jesus’ command thereby making false profit (Matt. 7:12).
Money is an essential thing in this life, so to desire money is not selfish, it is necessary (Ecc. 10:19). God wants you to have money for three fundamental reasons; to fund the kingdoms’ work (Mk 16:15), to provide for your own household (1 Tim 5:8), to subdue the earth (Gen 1:28). God doesn’t want you getting money the wrong way – it attracts a curse.
Imagine how many lives have been ruined because a talented, but dishonest businessman took the wrong path never to return again? When people pursue wealth and fame instead of the glory of God, they often take crooked paths to attain their goals – they lie, cheat and steal to succeed in life. Prov. 21:6 “Wealth that comes from telling lies disappears quickly and leads to death.”
Prayer
Father in the name of Jesus, I choose to walk in honesty and fairness in my enterprise/business in Jesus name. I am led by the fear of God and the wisdom of God in Jesus name. Amen.
