WRONG ATTITUDE TOWARDS MONEY: COVETOUSNESS

“It does not go into the mind, but into the stomach. Then it goes out of the body." (When Jesus said this, he meant that no longer was any food unclean for people to eat.)
Mark 7:19-23
Main Text: 1 Tim 6:9-10 & Colossians 3:5

And Jesus said, "The things that come out of people are the things that make them unclean. All these evil things begin inside people, in the mind: evil thoughts, sexual sins, stealing, murder, adultery, greed, evil actions, lying, doing sinful things, jealousy, speaking evil of others, pride, and foolish living. All these evil things come from inside and make people unclean."

Covetousness is mentioned in the ten commandments as a grave sin (Ex. 20:17 & Luke 12:15). Covetousness is defined as being marked by inordinate desire for wealth or possessions that belong to another. The Cambridge dictionary defines it as having strong wish to have something, especially something that belongs to someone else. The Easton bible dictionary defines it as a strong desire after the possession of worldly things. It is sometimes the more aggravated form of avarice.

Covetousness is crippling. Covetousness and Coveting are two different things; covetousness is a way of thinking that eventually leads to coveting. It’s a natural carnal mindset that doesn’t include God. Having money is not evil, it is the love of it that leads to evil. A person who is covetous and has no money can love money to the point of killing another person to make some money.

God doesn’t mind if you’ve money, He just doesn’t want money to have you. It is impossible to handle money correctly without God’s help. God wants you to have money, He desires you control money with the right heart.

Confession

By the power of the Spirit, I mortify idle, worthless and unproductive thoughts. I use my mind correctly to picture the glorious and victorious life I’ve been called to live in Christ. Amen.

Rom 7:7 “What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed, I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "Do not covet."
