THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT – WHAT IS SELF-CONTROL? 1

“God's Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled. There is no law against behaving in any of these ways.”
Galatians 5:22-23(CEV)
Main Text:

The fruit of the Spirit is the change in our character that comes about because of the Spirit of God in us. When we accepted Christ Jesus, something special happened to us, we because a new nature of man, different from the first Adam, we received the God’s nature and Spirit. We don’t have the capacity to become Christians on our own, we cannot grow on our own. Philippians 2:13 “God is working in you to make you willing and able to obey him.” (CEV) Every good thing we do is the fruit of God’s Spirit in us.

The Webster dictionary defines self-control as “restraint exercised over one’s own impulses, emotions or desire. Self-control is synonymous with Temperance. It involves moderation, constraint, and the ability to say no to our fleshly lust and baser desires. According to the Nelson Bible Dictionary, the meaning of the word temperate in English translations of the Bible should not be restricted to the kind of self-control a person exerts by abstaining from alcoholic beverages.

The temperance of which the Bible speaks is far more inclusive. It indicates a self-control that masters all kinds of sensual desires, such as sexual desire or the desire for material comfort. Through temperance the Christian disciplines body and spirit, so that he is more capable of striving for his spiritual reward.

Confession: I am glad about today, I am glad I have the Spirit of God, therefore, I am blessed coming in and blessed going out. I am blessed in the city and blessed in the field. I am established by the Lord, glory to God I’m blessed.
