THE PROMISE OF THE SPIRIT
“And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.”
Exodus 33:14
Main Text: Main Text: 1 Samuel 10:6
The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament was called “Ruach” and named “Pneuma” in the New Testament. While the term 'Holy Spirit' is less frequent in the Old Testament compared to the New Testament, various other terms are employed to describe the same divine Person. Before Jesus left the world, he made a promise that still stands today “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” (John 14:16).
Jesus fulfilled this promise by sending the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:1-4 “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is bestowed upon all believers. In fact, being a New Testament believer is inherently tied to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, a truth emphasized in Romans 8:9, 14–16. Furthermore, each believer in the New Testament has the potential to be empowered by the Holy Spirit, as highlighted in Acts 1:8. God's desire was for all believers to encounter both the indwelling and empowering aspects of the Holy Spirit. It seems God intended these two dimensions of the Spirit's work to represent distinct facets within the broader operation of the Spirit under the new covenant.
Confession:
The Holy Spirit resides in me, I have been empowered by the Spirit of God, therefore I walk in signs and wonders, in Jesus’ name.
