PRAYER

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Mark 11:24
Main Text: Main text: 1 John 5:14–15

Prayer is one of the most powerful forms of communication known to mankind. Life on earth is hazardous on a spiritual level, and as believers, we need regular conversations with our heavenly Father to keep us from being overwhelmed by everything going on around us. However, there’s a right way and a wrong way to pray. When we go to God, we see results when we talk things over with Him in a two-way conversation, instead of simply reciting a set of memorized words.

Prayer is communication with God! The Oxford dictionary defines communication as “a talk, especially an informal one, between two or more people.” When we converse with ourselves we have a better understanding of each other and our thought patterns, similarly, when we converse with the Lord, we open ourselves to knowing God better and reasoning on a higher plane than that which is common to man. Praying and meditating on His Word brings us closer to Him, and allows us to learn His true nature. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and praying helps us to maintain our spiritual compass and rudder. We all have our good days and our bad days; therefore, every prayer will be different. Religion takes out prayer’s personal connection to God and turns it into the type of compartmentalized recitation we learned as children; but this isn’t how He wants to talk with us. True prayer comes from the heart, and the finished works of Jesus now give us the freedom to pray in His name. “And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full” (John 16:23, 24).

Prayer:

Father, I desire to know you better, I choose this day to open my heart to the rhythms of your voice. Amen.

Ephesians 6:17–18 “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

James 5:16 “Confess to one another therefore your faults (your slips, your false steps, your offenses, your sins) and pray [also] for one another, that you may be healed and restored [to a spiritual tone of mind and heart]. The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].”
