LEARN FROM THE RECHABITES 1
“Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.â€
Jeremiah 35:2
Main Text:
Jeremiah the prophet did what the Lord asked him to do, but look at the answer he got from the Rechabites in verse 6, “…We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us….” Many of the believers who are familiar with this story see the Rechabites as a classic example of what a life of absolute obedience to a higher authority should be. We want to look here at some of the things that make the obedience of the Rechabites possible.
The first thing is that the Rechabites knew that their father did not want them to drink wine. If they didn’t know it, they would have been walking contrary to it by drinking wine whenever they wanted or whenever the opportunity to do so presented itself. Note that it is the commandment of God which you know that you can obey, not the one you do not know. Many believers do not know what God the Father expects of His children and so they walk in disobedience to His will on a daily basis. But then in the sight of the Lord ignorance is not an excuse for living a life of disobedience because everything we need to know about His will is revealed to us in the scripture and by His Spirit. That is why the first part of Micah 6:8 says, “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good…” This brings us again to the need for every believer to search the scripture and discover what the Lord requires of us in terms of conduct, etc. A life of absolute obedience to the will of God is not possible without a thorough knowledge of what that will is. And nobody can know the will of God as he ought to if the only time he opens his Bible is when he’s in church and the preacher or teacher is calling out Bible verses.
