DON’T BE SELFISH
“And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.”
Luke 4:43
Main Text: MAIN TEXT: PHILLIPPIANS 2:4-5
The word "selfish" highlights a lack of consideration for others, focusing solely on one's own profit or pleasure. In contrast, true Christianity calls for selflessness, which involves prioritizing the needs and wishes of others over one's own desires. Both definitions underscore the critical concept of "others." Selfishness is centered on self, while selflessness is centered on others. Embracing a selfless attitude aligns with the core of Christian teaching, where loving and serving others reflects the love and sacrifice of Jesus. The presence of "others" in both definitions emphasizes the importance of considering and prioritizing those around us, making selflessness a fundamental aspect of genuine Christian living.
Jesus’ teachings and actions consistently emphasize the importance of others. He frequently spoke about the need to reach out to those beyond oneself, as seen in His statements like “I have other sheep” (John 10:16), “I must preach to others” (Mark 1:38), and the Great Commission to “go ye into the world and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). These statements reflect a life focused on the well-being and salvation of others.
Selfishness is not just a personal flaw but a characteristic opposed to the nature of God. Lucifer’s fall from grace is a stark example of how self-centered ambition can lead to ruin. In Isaiah 14:12-14, Lucifer’s multiple declarations of “I will” reveal his self-absorption and desire for personal elevation above God. This self-centered attitude not only led to his downfall but also serves as a warning against prioritizing self over others. The consequences of such selfishness are severe. It leads to spiritual downfall and detachment from God’s purposes. When we focus solely on ourselves, we neglect the call to serve and uplift others, which is central to the Christian faith.
Confession:
I acknowledge and embrace the blessings that God has bestowed upon me. I recognize His favor, provision, and grace in every area of my life, and I live in gratitude for His abundant blessings. I prioritize the needs and well-being of others in my thoughts and actions. I am attentive to their needs and strive to be a source of support and encouragement. My life is marked by compassion and a genuine concern for those around me.
