LEARN FROM THE RECHABITES 2

“Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.”
Jeremiah 35:2
Main Text:

The Rechabites were not forgetful hearers. Definitely their father had not just given them the instruction not to drink wine: it was probably a commandment they were given long before Jeremiah went to speak to them. One lesson we as believers can learn from this is not to be forgetful hearers of the words and instructions of our Father in heaven. In Joshua 1:8 the Lord said to Joshua, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein…” What the Lord was telling Joshua in essence was not to allow the law to slip from him: he was to hold onto it, meditate on it, talk about it, etc. Deuteronomy 11:18 And of course it is the commandment you remember that you can think of obeying. Let us get into the habit of meditating on the word of God, and remember that unlike Jonadab, God lives for ever and so is able to notice when His children walk contrary to His will.

Another thing to note is that the Rechabites had their father in great honor, which was the reason why they were not ready or willing to disobey his instruction. Mind you these people were not children that were afraid of being spanked by their father. They were grown up men and most likely their father was even dead at this point so there was really nothing that he as a man could do to them. But they honored him to a point where even in their adult life they were still holding onto the commandment he gave to them. Unfortunately many believers do not honor God half that much. In Malachi 1:6 the Lord said, “A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master
