THE DECEITFULNESS OF RICHES 1
"And the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful."
Mark 4:19 (NKJV)
Main Text:
Jesus spoke about the deceitfulness of riches, and I believe it's important for us as believers to pay attention to that warning and understand what our Lord meant. God does want us to prosper, however, He doesn't want us to prosper through greed or the scheming of this world. In the anchor verse, we see Jesus warning about things that have the capacity to choke the Word out of our Spirit Man and He highlights this deep truth- The deceitfulness of riches. However, the question is who is in danger of being deceived by riches? Is it those who are rich already, or those who are far from it? I believe this scripture is for both parties, because in times of want and abundance, the deceitfulness of riches has proven to be a sneaky foe.
The rich fool is a classic example of a man who was carried away by the deceitfulness of riches. Luke 12:16-21 (MSG). “Then he told them this story: “The farm of a certain rich man produced a terrific crop. He talked to himself: ‘What can I do? My barn isn’t big enough for this harvest.’ Then he said, ‘here’s what I’ll do: I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll gather in all my grain and goods, and I’ll say to myself, self, you’ve done well! You’ve got it made and can now retire. Take it easy and have the time of your life!’ “Just then God showed up and said, ‘Fool! Tonight you die. And your barnful of goods—who gets it?’ That’s what happens when you fill your barn with self and not with God. This man was blessed by God, he never acknowledged God in his wealth, he wanted to attain more, and he believed he was self-made. As God continued to bless the man, instead of using his increase to further the will of God, all he was interested in was managing his increase and accumulating his growing wealth.
Confession; I am a Child of God, therefore I have authority over greed and covetousness. I am blessed beyond measure.
