THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT – WHAT IS PATIENCE? 1
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.â€
Galatians 5:22-23(ESV)
Main Text:
There are two Greek words that translates patience in the New Testament - they are “Hupomonc” means “a remaining under” as when one bears up under a burden. It refers to steadfastness in difficult circumstances. “Makrothumia” which is used in Galatians 5:22 is a compound word formed from “makros” which means long and “thumos” which means passion or temper. Patience in Galatians 5:22 literally means “long temper”, in the sense of the ability to hold one’s temper for a long time. The King James Version calls this longsuffering. A patient person is able to endure much pain and suffering without complaining. A patient person is slow to anger as he waits for God to provide comfort and punish wrongdoing. Since it’s a fruit of the Spirit, we can only walk in makrothumia through the power and work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Patience comes from a position of power. A person may have the ability to take revenge or cause trouble, but the patience brings about self-restraint and careful thinking. Losing patience is a sign of weakness. We are patient through trying situations out of hope for a coming deliverance, we are patient through trying situations out of hope for a coming deliverance, we are patient with a trying person out of compassion. We choose to love that person and want what’s best for them. 2 Thessalonians 3:5 “May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.” (ESV)
Confession: Christ has redeemed me from the curse of the law, Christ has redeemed me from poverty, sickness and spiritual death. I am a Spirit being, therefore, I am patient. I have promotion now, I have increase now, in the name of Jesus money comes to me. I am blessed.
