GREED

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
1 John 2:16 (KJV)
Main Text:

In our world today, people do incredible things to amass wealth; they subject themselves to inhuman conditions, engage in the most ridiculous and compromise, involve in blood sacrifice, all in the pursuit of Money.  Greed goes much further than money. A person can be greedy for fame, possession, attention, compliments, gifts, another person’s time and much more. Greed is far more than money; it is a spiritual disease of the heart affecting all areas of a person’s life.

A greedy person is not a person of the spirit. Greed is not an attribute of God Almighty so it can come from Him. “For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world” (1 John 2:16)

Greed is not the same as aspiration, because physical blessings — earthly power and money comes from God. However, the inordinate desire to amass and accumulate wealth in ways that distorts human nature should be guarded against diligently.

People who are covetous must repent and submit to the Holy Spirit who will empower us to live a life free from greed and full of righteousness and generosity.

Prayer

Father in the name of Jesus, I rebuke the spirit of covetousness and greed and embrace the spirit of contentment in Jesus name, Amen.
