BE CAREFUL NOT TO MISBEHAVE

“And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, the king hath commanded me a business…, let no man know anything of the business where about I send thee…”
1 Samuel 21:2
Main Text:

“Keep one thing forever in view: the truth; and if you do this, though it may seem to lead you away from the opinion of men, it will assuredly conduct you to the throne of God”.-anonymous.

In distress at this time, David fled to the tabernacle of God. It is great comfort in a day of trouble to know that we have a God to whom we may run for divine intervention. But there is something here to note! David told Ahimelech a gross lie! This was nothing but falsehood, extorted through fear. David probably supposed, like many other persons, that a lie was quite excusable which is told for the sole purpose of saving the speaker’s life (Romans 3:8). But what is essentially sinful, can never, under any circumstance change its immoral character. The scripture does not conceal it; and we dare not justify it. It was ill done, and eventually led to the death of the priests of the Lord!

David was known to be a man of great faith and courage, yet both attributes failed him at this time because he gave place to the crippling effect of fear and cowardice. Had he trusted God aright, he would not have used such a sorry, sinful strategy for his own preservation. David reflected upon it afterward with regret and repented of his lying. (1 Samuel 22:22)

It is not written for our imitation, not even in the greatest straits, but for our admonition. “Let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall”; and let us all pray daily, “Lord, lead us not into temptation…”. If we would but trust God aright, we would not have to resort to miserable and dishonouring devices for our escape in times of tests.

Let us therefore learn from this and watch our attitudes and ‘defence’ strategies when ‘the lion’s den appears visible before us!

Prayer: I receive wisdom to overcome every trial of my faith
