YOU ARE THE SALT

You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
Matthew 5:13
Main Text:

Salt adds taste when applied normally. Before the advent of freezers and fridges, salt was used to preserve food items from decay and destruction. Salt therefore is an emblem or a symbol of sweetness and permanence. During an outbreak of violence by extremists against churches in Indonesia, an angry Muslim mob approached the seminary one night chanting their slogans and waving their machetes. When they arrived at the buildings, they found a circle of Muslim people surrounding the campus holding hands in a large circle. They said to the extremists, “We will not allow you to destroy this church. These people help us and our children with all our needs. You may not harm them!” The mob then disappeared. Jesus is making a statement of fact here when he says, “You are the salt of the earth!” It is not a command or wish list. It is to be reality here and now. The implication is that we are to be what God has already made us to be. However, Jesus warned that salt can lose its flavor. Pure salt as we know it, made up of sodium chloride, can’t lose its taste. In ancient Israel, however, farmers would dig salt from the shores of the Dead Sea. Although it was called salt and looked like salt, it was mixed with other substances. Farmers would make a pile of the salty material to use on their crops, but when the rains came, the pure salt would sometimes drain away. What was left looked like salt, but it had lost its saltiness. What about you beloved? Are you a salty Christian or you just look like it? Sin can make you lose the flavor. Keep longing for the Word of God to guide you on the daily basis. Prayer: May my life bring the flavor of salvation to the lost in this year Further Reading: Matthew 5:10-14 Read through the Bible: Nehemiah 4 & Luke 10
