AVOIDING COVENANT CHALLENGERS

“...also the Lord telleth thee that He will make thee a house. And when thy days be fulfilled...I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom
II Samuel 7:11-12
Main Text:

David believed God and was ready to enjoy everything that God promised him. But then in II Samuel 15 we are made to understand that Absalom, one of David’s sons, decided to rob David of the peace and stability the Lord had promised him. He decided to become a covenant challenger. Absalom conspired against David and as a result, verse 14 of II Samuel 15 says, ...Arise, and let us flee...” Verse 16 says, “And the king went forth, and all his household after him…” So instead of sitting peacefully on the throne as the Lord had promised him, David had to start running again to save his life, just like he did when Saul was after him. II Samuel 15:30 even says, “And David went up by the accent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up…” And because David became a fugitive, after the Lord had honored and given him peace and rest, chapter 16 recorded how Shimei, a member of the family of Saul, who ordinarily would probably not have been able to stand before David came and began pouring insults on him and casting stones at him.

Now every believer has received promises from the Lord. The Lord has also made covenant with many of us and in Psalm 89:34 He says, “My covenant will I not break... But then, the devil, who always likes to make God look like a lying, unfaithful, covenant-breaking God, would send “Absaloms” who would try to challenge or contend for God’s covenant with us. The aim of these covenant challengers is to rob us of the good things the Lord has promised us, shake our confidence in Him, and make us fall away from grace. You can now see why you must not joke with the Word of God. The word has prevailing power!

Prayer: Let fire destroy every covenant challenger over me
