WHO IS THIS MAN?

And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath….
Ephesians 6:4
Main Text:

Today, I congratulate all the fathers for this occasion of 2018 Fathers’ Day and bless you in the name of Jesus.

From my observations so far, we talk about mothers as being the focal point of the family. And in certain critical ways, they always will be.

But as fathers we have just as important a role to play in the lives of our boys and girls that goes beyond carrying the family’s title as head of the home. We must get back to the father’s traditional roles of provision and protection. It was unheard of in first-century culture for a father to abandon his responsibilities in his home. Nowadays, it seems to be almost the norm that our men are now ‘run away fathers’. We are losing real fathers at an unprecedented rate in our quest for wealth. One expert said we are in danger of becoming a fatherless society. To a large degree, a child's view of God is based on their view of their father. You will see a lot of times that people compare their relationship with their earthly father to the one with their heavenly Father. Fathers are earthly representatives of God. And God is loving. God is caring. God is nurturing. At the same time, God is just, righteous, and holy.

So what are we to do? We are not to provoke them. In fact, the word provoke speaks of a repeated pattern of treatment that causes the child to have anger and resentment that boils over to outright hostility. Instead, we are to bring them up in the admonition of the Lord. Sure, career is important, but it’s a short, flighty thing compared to your relationship with your family. You may go through five or ten jobs during your working life. The relationship you have with your children lasts a lifetime. Be a godly model to your children sir! Teach them the Word of God and show love to their mum.

Prayer: I will never let you down even when things are not beautiful and good!
